The estimated number of Canadians living with chronic lymphedema is 1 million - giving it a prevalence of 2.8%. Lymphedema is swelling caused by excess protein-rich lymph trapped within the tissues. This is a chronic condition.
When lymphedema is undermanaged or not managed at all, or simply continues to progress, it can become a severe case.
Treatment may include compression bandages, massage, compression stockings, sequential pneumatic pumping, careful skin care and, rarely, surgery to remove swollen tissue or to create new drainage routes.
