Patients with diabetes require lifelong treatment and care. To avoid complications, such as foot infections which can lead to more serious issues, it's important to get proper foot care and also wear appropriate socks and footwear

Checking feet every day is absolutely crucial in maintaining healthy feet and to avoid injuries.

Why Diabetic Patients Need Specialty Shoes

Specialized footwear is required for diabetics primarily when they have neuropathy or compromised circulation. When diagnosed with neuropathy, a person might experience loss of protective level sensation. That means the patient might not feel pressure or trauma to the skin surface of their feet. If shoes don’t fit correctly (too narrow or wide, too shallow or too deep, too small or too big), this might cause pressure or chafing to the skin surface resulting in a bruise, blister or ulceration. When trauma to the foot is ignored, it can result in infection or even amputation! It is a very smart practice to visually check one’s feet at the end of each day to ensure there is no damage to the skin. If one notices something of concern, they should contact their health care professional immediately.

Diabetic footwear is very different from retail footwear.  Below are the required footwear features by diabetic patients:

1. Available in multiple widths.
2. Extra depth primarily in the toe box area.
3. One or more removable insoles that can be replaced with a soft diabetic insole (orthotic), either prefab or custom made.
4. Lace or Velcro closure (not slip-on).
5. Soft interior with a little to no seams
6. Constructed of soft leather or fabric materials that conforms to the foot. Stiff materials could cause undue pressure.

Paradigm Medical offers a wide variety of footwear that is appropriate for people with diabetes:
