The prevalence of lymphedema among people with morbid obesity is significant, especially among those with a body mass index (BMI) in the upper ranges.

Large fatty deposits can compress the lymphatic channels, creating either a mechanical disruption or complete obstruction. When the disruption/obstruction becomes profound, the lymphatic fluid exceeds transport capacity, and lymphedema occurs. This is most often seen in the arms and legs; however, in the presence of morbid obesity this swelling can occur over the abdomen, hips and buttock areas.

How do you treat obesity-induced lymphedema?

The standard treatment for lymphedema is Complex (or Combined) Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes manual lymphatic drainage, compression wrapping and/or compression garments, and education on skin safety and exercise provided by a certified lymphedema therapist.
